Me: You cant just make baklava... and you can't make it with out nuts. Baklava IS nuts....
Jesse: Well, what am I going to doooooooooo?
Me: We'll make hummus.

  6. Kids all over the world are torturing their mothers like this. I think we should rise against it!

  7. In our house we have a phrase for this. It is called the 'I need an asparagus costume by morning' situation. I feel your pain ;-)

  8. I'm with AFRo here - I would love that hummus recipe! Especially if it's something you can whip out at 7:30 at night!

  9. Blimey! It's a good job Jesse has such a mama on the ball. Can't imagine what mine would have ended up with demanding a Greek dish - any dish - at 7.30pm. That is officially switch off from kitchen duty time.

  10. Oh No! I used to do this to my Mum, and in a few shrot years, my kids will be doing it to me! I'd giving anything to break the cycle. But somehow I think it's unavoidable. GdeE.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I've never had Baklava or Hummus. But I know all about those last minute meals that need to be prepared for school the next day.

  18. Oh, boy, last minute projects. Those are killers!! My 11 year old has had a few of those just "pop" up. Drives me nuts! Once again, it sounds like you handled this crisis with calmness and style, babe! Way to go!

  21. Wow! You are a quick thinking mommy....I fear my boy will not fare so well with me as I wouldn't have known how to make any of it.

  22. Have no fear, revenge is just around life's corner....

In the near distant future, you will be able to snigger, like I do, when your daughter complains about last minute things HER kids have dropped on her....

Reveng ... of the Mummy kind :-)

  23. I am so glad that there are other mothers out there that go through the same thing I do. But in my house its usually poster board, that they need at 10pm the night before the project is due.

  24. Anything that starts with "I'm just..." is never going to be ended with anything logical. Crazy kids. ;)

  25. Yup...when all else fails make hummus (lol)

doesn't that work for just about eveything life has to offer? :o)

  26. Oh, wow! We haven't had days like that yet. Well...except when Madalyn volunteered me to bring juice for her class. And she told me about it on her way to the bus stop. Joy...

  27. I love how he said HE was going to make Baklava!! And yes, please share your hummus recipe...we eat massive amounts of it in my house...

  28. You ARE a seasoned mom! Nice recovery; that one (the forgetting til the night before) is a classic.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You are one calm, quick thinking Momma.

    I've learned so much.

I'm all over the hummus too. YUM-O.

    Saw you on SITS, sista!

  30. Yum!! Hummas!! Doesn't Bakliva take like 12 hours to make?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bakliva without nuts--that's like me ordering my Egg McMuffin with no egg :)!

Hummus is good. And fast. Nice save :)!

    ReplyDelete
  32. okay now i'm hungry! any chance you could share your recipe for both hummus and baklava? :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Isn't baklava a REALLY hard dish to make? I thought it took all day. At least you didn't make a last minute dash to Wal-Mart and send him to school with a hunk of Feta cheese. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. This sounds so much like a conversation I've had in my house on more than one occassion. Bless you for coming up with a quick alternative!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's a nice curve ball! I love it when they do that! Having a 21 & 13 year old, I've had my share of those days. Having a 4 & 7 year old, I'm sure there are going to be plenty more. Though, sometimes those last minute things turn out to be fun! Even if when I find out about them I'm ready to rake my eyeballs out.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh hummus! That is such a great healthy snack :) Accept when I eat the whole container !! hehe! My oldest is only going to be in 2nd grade but I know those days are coming! :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Gina- don't you know...it's their world and you are just in it! That is so funny!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Good story! I'm not looking forward to the days of surprise projects at 7:30pm. Maybe we'll homeschool. No surprises there, right? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Gotta love the way those projects sneak up on you!

Did you make the hummus or go to the store and buy hummus?? I would have done the latter :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Nothing like waiting till the last minute!!!!
    Hummus was a GREAT option!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. p.s. My name is Gina, too! What's your middle name?!?!?!
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh my gosh, is this what I have to look forward to?? poop in my dryer and cooking till midnight?? Ugh.

You sure have your hands full. ;)

ps congrats on your special day!! Are you in comment heaven or what!?!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mmmm...hummus! Teachers all across the internets are giggling at this though because we.just.know your daughter heard about this assignment for at least a week beforehand. Or it might have been extra credit or optional. Unless that teacher is pure evil. Or pregnant. All bets are off when the teach is pregnant!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Clever, mom! I'm way impressed you know how to make this.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oooo thanks for the heads up when Mister Man and Little Miss start pulling stunts like that! Of course, I have no chick peas in my house, so I probably would have had to go to allrecipes.com and looked up tzatziki, as we always have yogurt! Yay to you for pulling it off with little fuss!

    ReplyDelete
  46. That's classic...I used to throw my mom curveballs like that all the time. I was such a procrastinator - not a whole lot has changed. Baklava sounds so extravagant to make, unlike hummus. Good substitution!

    ReplyDelete
  47. You did better than I would have--I think it would have just been the pita for us. MAYBE I would have had some feta cheese...who knows?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yummmm. I remember in high school we had to make a French dish for French class. My group stayed up at my house till after midnight trying to make Napoleons. I didn't realize that each step had to be chilled for looooonnnnggg amounts of time...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Love it when they need something for the next day and it 5 minutes before bed time!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I so used to pull this stuff on my mom... I am a queen procrastinator!

Hope you enjoyed your day in SITS!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Nice! Hummus is really good. With pita bread, that would have been really good. Way to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I am soo not looking forward to those days!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Why, why, why do they wait to the last minute?
    Good save!!

    ReplyDelete

Go ahead, stroke my ego. I'll wait.
